An emblematic craft of Villedieu-les-Poêles from the XIXth century

Appearing from the XVIIIth century in Villedieu-les-Poêles, lace fabrication saw a great demand in the XIXth century. Unheard of at the time, this craft in 1850 employed around 600 women and young girls, often wives or daughters of the copper pan makers. The most typical motif is the rose, the four-leaf clover and the daisy. The work is produced on a loom, armed with a card to reproduce the motif to make and this is done with the aid of bobbins, these ones are also specific to Villedieu. The Museum of copper pots and pans/ House of Lace, located in La Cour du Foyer, 25 rue Général Huard, praise to those dexterous lace-makers. This know-how is still alive : integrated in the public library (médiathèque intercommunale), the school of lace, led by Maryline Lebois, is receiving growing success. Maryline was educated by M. Salvador, Master of Art. Come and discover or improve the art of bobbin lace-making in a convivial atmosphere. This delicate art and all its variations have many secrets for you ! These courses are open to all, whether beginner or more experienced.
